Academic Writing

Chicano English

This is an essay I wrote for my English course that focused on the dialectical components of Chicano English, a dialect of English found in regions across the United States. The essay focused on the regional and cultural characteristic that make Chicano English unique. Writing this essay required extensive research on the phonological, lexical, and grammatical features of the dialect. In order to do so, I investigated a number of textbooks and academic journals in order to inform the reader of the components of the dialect. I also included my own experience with the dialect as a Mexican American myself. Through this, I became more culturally aware of the influence of the English language in the Latino community while using my investigative and critical thinking skills to inform my readers.

Disciplinary Discourse

This is a report I wrote in memo format for my Business and Technical Writing course, focusing on giving an in depth analysis of a professional in my field of interest. I wrote my essay on Marion Olea, a Teen Librarian at the Northlake Public Library, and her role at the library and the types of writing she integrates in her day to day responsibilities. The assignment required an interview with the subject of our writing. I asked her a set of interactive questions and integrated them into my essay. Through this assignment, I gained an understanding of the role of a Teen Librarian and the importance of writing in a library environment through the analysis of the forms of communication used.

Huckleberry Finn Literary Analysis

This is a literary analysis I wrote for my American Literature course exploring the role of society in Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The essay explores Huck’s attempt to escape conforming to society, but concludes that no one can truly escape the clutches of a powerful society. Writing the essay required extensive analysis of Twain’s novel and encouraged me to ask questions as a reader in regards to the society Twain provides in his novel. Through asking and answering my own questions, I created an essay that encouraged the reader to explore a theme in Twain’s work that they might not have been aware of. Through critical thinking and analysis, I wrote an essay that questioned an individual’s role in society and the hold society has on us.
